Is Rome Safe to Visit in 2023

Gliding back through time, nestled in the heart of Italy, Rome stirs the romantic in all of us. But before you hop on the next gondola, let's consider a question you just can't google away: Is Rome safe to visit in 2023?

Transport & taxis risk

Standing in the grand Roma Termini, bronzed in the Mediterranean sun, you may wonder about the safety of local transportation. Rome's public transport system is usually secure and safe for tourists — buses, metro, and trams included. Taxis are plentiful and fairly reliable, but be aware of unlicensed 'cab sharks.' Always look for licensed taxis with official meters to avoid being overcharged.

Pickpockets risk

Like any bustling tourist hub, Rome has its share of light-fingered denizens. Places like the Colosseum, Roman Forum or Vatican City attract vast crowds, providing ample opportunity for pickpockets. Yet, statistically speaking, the risk remains low — it's always wise to stay alert and keep your valuables secured!

Natural disasters risk

Shaking things up a bit: earthquakes. Italy does lie in a seismic zone, but it's not something you should lose sleep over while in Rome. The city isn't immune to natural disasters, but the risk is very low. Plus, the local authorities are well equipped to handle such emergencies.

Terrorism risk

As for the specter of terrorism, Rome has not been a significant target. Italy possesses a robust security apparatus, and while no place is entirely immune, the risk, according to global safety metrics, remains very low.

Scams risk

Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither were its crafty scams. Whether it's a friendly local offering a 'good deal' on a Vespa tour or someone insisting you dropped a gold ring, caution is key. Although scams are not an everyday occurrence, staying informed about common tourist traps will fortify your defenses.

Women travelers risk

For the ladies gearing up for a Roman holiday, rest assured, Rome is generally safe. Harassment and catcalling can occur, especially in busy, tourist-populated areas. However, the vast majority of visits run smoother than a scoop of gelato on a summer day!

In conclusion, Rome is a reasonably safe city to explore in 2023. Yet, no matter the destination, purchasing travel insurance can save you from unexpected turns in your journey. It provides peace of mind, financial protection, and, in the rare event of a catastrophe, could be a literal life-saver. Keep in mind, whether you're captivated by the Colosseum or bewitched by the Sistine Chapel, safety first makes for the happiest travels!

Hey, I’m Evan! Even though I’ve been bitten by a piranha, left stranded in the Sahara when my camel ditched me, and even spent a night in a Bhutanese jail over a supposedly stolen fruit (I swear I didn’t take it!), I still love traveling so much I don’t think I’ll ever stop. With over 130 countries under my belt, I’m always on the lookout for the next wild adventure… hopefully with fewer bites, camel betrayals, and misunderstandings over fruit!
