Short and Sweet: Oakhurst Neighborhood Stroll

Prepare for an easy yet enlightening 2 km (1.2 miles) stroll through the heart of the Oakhurst neighborhood. This jaunt should take approximately 30 minutes of meandering through leafy streets, and it comes with an added perk: you'll get acquainted with some of Decatur's charming early 20th-century homes. The journey begins and ends at Oakhurst Park, a local family-favorite, which boasts an innovative playground and plenty of pleasant picnic spots.

Just Right: Decatur's Historic Walk

For those with a keener interest in history (and a couple hours to spare), embark upon a medium-length 5 km (3.1 miles) journey right through Decatur's historic district. The grand tableau of southern architectural styles available for viewing here is likely to leave your camera roll bursting at its digital seams!

Kickstart your walk at the historic Decatur Courthouse that currently hosts the DeKalb History Center. After soaking up the historic knowledge, proceed north towards McCoy Park for a peaceful pause. Then, make your way down south on Clairemont Avenue, swinging by the Agnes Scott College campus. Rich in history and draped in a lush canopy of greenery, the college campus is a sight to behold. After admiring the gothic architecture, loop back towards the Courthouse, wrapping up your journey in approximately 2 hours.

The Long Haul: Green Gems of Decatur Trek

Ah, now, for the adventurers and nature lovers amongst you, gear up for a hearty 12 km (7.5 miles) trek that's set to take you around 4 hours. This trail weaves through some of the greenest parts of Decatur, yes, but it's not for the weak-kneed!

Start at Dearborn Park, surrounded by gorgeous woodland. Meander northeast, across the south fork of Peachtree Creek (keen eyes might spot wildlife!). Then, navigate towards the sprawling Mason Mill Park, with its towering trees and scenic trails. Take a breather here, maybe have a bite to eat. Once recharged, proceed west to Medlock Park for a gentle stroll across open green spaces.

Finally, sweep down south through the quieter residential stretches to loop back to Dearborn Park again. Beware, your legs might be staging a minor mutiny by this stage, but hey, the sweet memories of this green trek will be worth it!

Hey, I’m Evan! Even though I’ve been bitten by a piranha, left stranded in the Sahara when my camel ditched me, and even spent a night in a Bhutanese jail over a supposedly stolen fruit (I swear I didn’t take it!), I still love traveling so much I don’t think I’ll ever stop. With over 130 countries under my belt, I’m always on the lookout for the next wild adventure… hopefully with fewer bites, camel betrayals, and misunderstandings over fruit!
