The Charm of Chennai: Unmissable Walking Tours

Prepare to strap up those walking shoes and embark on an enchanting exploration of Chennai. Whether you're seeking a stroll or committing to a trek, these three varied routes take in the best this captivating Indian city has to offer.

The Marina Amble (Short)

Distance: 5 km / approx. 3 miles
Estimated Time: 1 - 1.5 hours

For a lazy morning stroll, I can't recommend the Marina Beach Promenade enough. Extending for about 5 kilometers along the bay, the walk takes you from the bustling Marina Lighthouse to the peaceful Gandhi Statue.

Start your day with panoramic views atop the lighthouse before meandering down the sandy sprawl. Along the way, you'll spot the imposing facade of the Madras University and the adorable statues at the Children’s Park. Don't forget to grab a sundal from one of the local sellers, it's a local chickpea snack that's simply divine!

The Mylapore Meander (Medium)

Distance: 7 km / approx. 4.3 miles
Estimated Time: 2.5 - 3 hours

Fancy walking through centuries of history? The bustling neighborhood of Mylapore is certainly the place to be.

Begin your expedition at the ancient Kapaleeshwarar Temple, a perfect specimen of the Dravidian style of architecture. Unwind in the serene environs of the Pamban Swamigal Temple, then head west onto Kutchery Road, home to cultural hubs like Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Chennai Cultural Academy. The Margazhi festival, if you happen to be here in December or January, is a must-watch!

Round off your journey amidst the leafy environs of the Nageshwara Rao Park. Ah, there's nothing quite like a warm evening in a cool park, is there?

The Guindy Gallop (Long)

Distance: 10 km / approx. 6.2 miles
Estimated Time: 4 - 5 hours

Are you ready for a long but rewarding day of ambulation? Wonderful! The Guindy National Park, one of the few located in a city center globally, offers a variety of nature trails with abundant flora and fauna.

Kick-start your adventure at the Guindy Children’s Park. Next, scout out the Snake Park, where slithering reptiles will have you gasping in awe and a bit of trepidation, perhaps? Don't worry, they're safely behind glass!

Continue your journey towards the Raj Bhavan, but don't forget to take in the mesmerizing serene setting of the park. Lastly, a visit to the Chennai Turtle Walk, an initiative to save Olive Ridley Turtles, would make for an excellent and fulfilling close to your walk.

So, my intrepid explorers, pick your trail and set forth. Chennai awaits, alive with stories and secrets to share!

Hey, I’m Evan! Even though I’ve been bitten by a piranha, left stranded in the Sahara when my camel ditched me, and even spent a night in a Bhutanese jail over a supposedly stolen fruit (I swear I didn’t take it!), I still love traveling so much I don’t think I’ll ever stop. With over 130 countries under my belt, I’m always on the lookout for the next wild adventure… hopefully with fewer bites, camel betrayals, and misunderstandings over fruit!
